you do not choose
your fairy tales,

you stumble
into them.

you stumble
into adventures
you might have wanted to pass;

accidentally end up on unknown roads
that go on and on
through lightless forests
deserted wastelands
with no knowledge of what lies ahead,
with no knowledge of
your own strength

for a fairy tale is no fairy tale
if it only speaks of leisure,
calm,
and happiness…

no, fairytales are the shards of truth
that rip open the fabric of the everyday,
that force someone to be a hero
even if they don’t know themselves;

force them to push through their doubts
walk through the paths of their fears
to go as far as it takes
to find the truth about themselves -

a fairy tale is something
that tells us the truth
about who we are.

and yet
they give us the choice:

do I want to,
despite my doubts,
look for goodness
so long that it brings me to my courage?

so do not trust them if they tell you
that fairy tales are not true:
they are as true
as the longing within you

for somewhere, behind unknown clouds
is the place where
we’ve become who we really are

a kingdom
only for us to find.
