my child, with the light in her face
is gazing at the newly risen light,
the sun you can still
look directly in the eyes
”mom…! the sun is turning blue…!” she says,
squinting at the light, laughing
and I explain why it looks like that;
why the sun doesn’t really look yellow
but white and blue if you look directly at it
(which by the way might be dangerous)
but she doesn’t buy into it;
pursing her lips, tilting her head,
finally
declaring with determination:
”maybe the sun just
wants to turn into the moon…!
and now I purse my lips,
stay happily silent, thinking:
may it be so
may be sun be jealous of the moon,
the moon envy the sun
may the world of this child still be
a miracle wrapped around the reality,
a wonder
hovering above every thought
and I won’t, ever,
be the one
who dims the wonder
dims the laughing eyes of the sun.
